Chile is administratively divided into 16 regions. North to south, these are:

Each province is headed by a Regional Governor, who is democratically elected by direct popular suffrage. Additionally, there are 56 provinces that are headed by a Provincial Presidential Delegate, who is appointed by the President of the Republic.

At the local level, the country is distributed in 346 municipalities, which are in charge of a Mayor and a Municipal Council whose members depend on the amount of population living in their territories. Both authorities are popularly elected by direct vote every four years.
