Origin and Traditions

According to the latest archeological and anthropological research in Chile, the national territory was inhabited more than 10,000 years ago.

According to Law 19.253, the State recognizes the following as the main indigenous ethnic groups in Chile:

  • Mapuche 
  • Aymara
  • Rapa Nui
  • Diaguitas
  • Atacameños
  • Quechuas
  • Collas
  • Changos
  • Kawashkar
  • Yagán

During the XVI century, part of the country belonged to the Inca empire, during the same period it was discovered by Diego de Almagro and conquered by Pedro de Valdivia.

The process of independence and autonomy from Spain began with the declaration of the First National Board of Government, dated September 18, 1810, whose work materialized in the Declaration of Independence of February 12, 1818.
